Ideally, when a man completes the Benilde Hall Program, he goes out in the world, gets a job, gets an apartment and starts his life over. Unfortunately it doesn’t always work that well.
Rebuilding a life takes time and patience. The stress of being on his own again and the loss of constant support from counselors and friends can cause some men to return to their substance abuse habits in order to cope. If they are lucky, they’ll end up back at Benilde.
To help break this cycle, Benilde Hall has begun construction on the Matt Talbot Supportive Housing Project across the street from our 23rd Street location in Kansas City, Missouri. The project will hold 12 studio apartments, each with 900 square feet. The apartments will be simply furnished and will have a full kitchen and bath. The units will also have microwaves, dishwashers and central air.
Each apartment will house one Benilde Hall graduate for a minimum of one year. Residents are welcome to come to Benilde for meals, counseling, meetings, and to visit friends. All residents will be charged monthly rent and will be expected to have steady jobs.
The apartments will be closely monitored and staffed by Benilde Hall. Residents will also sign a Code of Conduct with their lease. Security cameras will monitor the premises and Benilde Hall staff will conduct unannounced walk-throughs of the units. Suspicion of substance abuse or other unwanted activity will result in a search. If a resident is caught with drugs or alcohol, he will lose his apartment.
The rules are strict and simple. The message is loving and strong - make yourself whole, we are here for you.
