Statistics

Benilde Hall serves homeless chemically dependant men. More than 75% have no income. Last year, upon entering our program:

  • all were homeless
  • 99% were abusing drugs
  • 99% were abusing alcohol
  • 60% were suffering from mental illness
  • 10% were HIV+
  • 6% were physically disabled

It is estimated that of the homeless nationally

  • 22% have a mental illness
  • 30% have substance abuse issues
  • At least 33% suffer from severe and persistent chronic psychiatric disorders
  • 40%-50% are “dually diagnosed” - suffering from mental illness and alcohol and/or drugs
  • Veterans represent 26% of homeless people but only 11% of the civilian population.

A study of the homeless in Kansas City found that:

  • 26%of the homeless had a mental illness
  • 40% had a substance abuse addiction
  • 41% were single men

Last year, 175 men were served.  82 of them were Veterans. Results included:

  • 91% of participants moved to permanent housing
  • 87% of residents improved their employment status
  • 94 % new clients remained clean / sober for their first 30 days
  • 100% of residents improved their social skills by discharge
