Benilde Hall serves homeless chemically dependant men. More than 75% have no income. Last year, upon entering our program:
- all were homeless
- 99% were abusing drugs
- 99% were abusing alcohol
- 60% were suffering from mental illness
- 10% were HIV+
- 6% were physically disabled
It is estimated that of the homeless nationally
- 22% have a mental illness
- 30% have substance abuse issues
- At least 33% suffer from severe and persistent chronic psychiatric disorders
- 40%-50% are “dually diagnosed” - suffering from mental illness and alcohol and/or drugs
- Veterans represent 26% of homeless people but only 11% of the civilian population.
A study of the homeless in Kansas City found that:
- 26%of the homeless had a mental illness
- 40% had a substance abuse addiction
- 41% were single men
Last year, 175 men were served. 82 of them were Veterans. Results included:
- 91% of participants moved to permanent housing
- 87% of residents improved their employment status
- 94 % new clients remained clean / sober for their first 30 days
- 100% of residents improved their social skills by discharge
